What a Chief Operating Officer Does: Scope, Pay and Reporting
The COO owns how the company delivers what it sold. Where the CEO decides what the company will be, the COO decides how it runs on Tuesday: production, supply chain, service, and the operating cadence that keeps commitments honest.
What the role actually owns
- Production or service delivery and the quality standard behind it
- Supply chain, procurement and the working capital tied up in it
- The operating cadence: what is reviewed weekly, monthly and by whom
- Cross functional execution where commercial promises meet operational capacity
- Frequently IT, quality, health and safety, and site management

When a company needs one
Rarely because revenue crossed a threshold. Usually because complexity did: multiple sites, multiple channels, a supply chain that now determines margin, or a CEO spending most of the week inside operational escalation instead of on the market. Where the need is temporary, for example during an integration or a plant transition, the role is frequently filled on an interim basis.
