Fractional Manager vs Temporary Manager: which one to hire
Both are senior executives engaged without a permanent contract. The difference is time and depth: a fractional manager gives you part of a week indefinitely, a temporary manager gives you a full role for a defined period.
The comparison in one table
Choose fractional when
- Revenue does not yet support a full-time executive at that level
- The function exists but lacks senior direction rather than hands
- The founder wants a sparring partner with accountability, not a consultant
- You want to test the shape of the role before writing a permanent job description
Choose temporary when
- The seat is empty and someone must decide today
- The business is in a turnaround and needs a full-time operator
- An owner change, a merger, or a covenant breach has a fixed clock on it
- The permanent search will take four to six months and the gap cannot wait
Where the two overlap
A common and effective structure starts temporary and moves fractional. The executive takes the full role for six months to stabilise the business and build the team, then steps back to one or two days a week for another six months to support the permanent hire. Cost drops sharply while continuity is preserved.
